Frequently Asked Questions
These are the more common questions I receive. If after looking here your question still isn't answered, please contact me.
What is your hourly rate?
I don’t exchange time for money. Even though I have a basic daily rate of $1,250+GST, I quote projects based on the value of the work as well as the time to develop it. That's because you’re receiving a utility that comes from my 20-years experience, all crammed into the duration of your project.
To work out a project fee, I look at the quality of the brief, what’s involved, the company the work is for, and similar previous projects I have worked on. I then provide an itemized, fixed price quote. This won’t change unless the parameters of the project change.
If you see the value in investing in professional services like my copywriting, ideas, and/or brand strategy skills, and my fee is acceptable to you, then we’re in business. If not, that's okay.
There are times, depending on the opportunity, where I take a shareholding in the company in exchange for my input. Profit-sharing is another possibility. I do this on a case-by-case basis.
What are your terms of trade?
More often than not I will charge 50% of the project fee upfront. (Some companies have strict rules with respect to supplier payments, so I'm usually open to discussion if it is a sticking point.) I figure if a company can't pay 50% upfront then there could be an issue with overall payment. And life is too short to be chasing debts and hiring hit men, I mean, debt collectors especially when a lot of time has already gone into a project
The remaining 50% is due 14 days from completion of the project. (Some large companies will only pay 20th month following invoice.)
I am happy to send you my formal terms and conditions which you need to agree to at the point of signing off my quote. My lawyers wrote these in a manner that ensures all debt survives an Estate. Yes, if you die I still get my money :).
What sort of budget do I need as a minimum to engage your services?
Given my workloads and the time that goes into even the smaller jobs, I usually charge a minimum of a basic day's rate, which is $1,250+GST. Nothing is charged until my quote is approved in writing.
How do I become a copywriter in Advertising?
Funny you should ask, see my Blog post on this topic.
You seem to spell some words differently to me; why?
We use UK English in New Zealand. That means we spell words the same way as the Queen or the British Prime Minister and his people.
The other common English is US English. It's pretty much the same as UK English but with a few spelling differences. For instance, in the UK and New Zealand, we spell "colour" with a "u" and in the US, it is "color". Things like that.
I can write in UK or US English, whatever suits you and your audience(s).
