Transformation doesn’t come from playing it safe

The human mind fascinates me. For a while, I thought I’d become a psychologist; painting new realities for people. Then I discovered advertising.

American ad executive Jerry Della Femina said it best: “It’s the most fun you can have with your clothes on.”

How is that quote even remotely unappealing?!

I struck a conversation with a genuinely humble but highly-esteemed Executive Creative Director at Saatchi & Saatchi. We kept talking via email.

He became my first mentor and role model, someone I wanted to emulate. He encouraged me to apply to a prestigious Advertising School that only accepted 12 students each year.

Competition was fierce but I was accepted.

Since then I’ve worked for Saatchi & Saatchi, McCann-Erickson, Colenso, Ogilvy and more. I learned from advertising giants, working with blue-chip clients across every industry you can imagine.

I’ve been designing communications for more than a quarter of a century. I architect how businesses speak to their audiences… strategically and with intent.

But my real education? That came from life, and taking a leap of faith from a highly paid ad executive role to start my own strategic and creative consultancy in 2002.

What Loss, Reinvention and Awakening Taught Me About Business

As a writer, you want to draw on your experiences. I’ve had some ‘interesting’ ones:

  • A Mako shark attack as a nipper, followed by an intense, unprotected, face-to-face Great White encounter the very next time I returned to open water…
    11 years later! So far, I’m two-for-two as shark bait 
  • My own death (this place is not the end, and you are not simply your mind and body)
  • Global travel across continents and cultures
  • The brutal and sudden loss of my first wife
  • Solo fatherhood
  • Total financial loss
  • Complete reinvention
  • New love
  • Personal awakening
  • Peace.

These weren’t just “life lessons.” They fundamentally changed how I see the world and business.

Here’s what I learned:

Nothing is ever as bad as you think. Even “failure” is just another lesson.

Life’s too short to live with regrets. 

With that lens, you cut away the BS. You get to the crux of issues fast. And fear no longer clouds your approach. 

After 25+ years in this industry studying human nature along with everything I’ve experienced in life, I intuitively know what will work for a client. And more importantly, what won’t.
